Indischer Schwarztee mit zitronig-frischem Bergamotte-Aroma. Erstklassige Bio-QualitätEarl Grey ist eine Teemischung, die ursprünglich aus ausschliesslich chinesischen Teesorten bestand und mit dem feinen, duftig-bitteren Öl der Bergamotte leicht aromatisiert wurde. Der Tee wurde nach Charles Grey, 2. Earl Grey (1764-1845) benannt. Dieser hob 1833 als britischer Premierminister das Preismonopol der East India Company im Teehandel mit China auf. Jedoch ist der Tee keine eigentliche Erfindung dieses Earl Grey. Die Legende besagt, dass bei einem Sturm auf der Überfahrt die Ladung stark durcheinander geschleudert wurde und sich Bergamotte-Öl auf die Teeballen ergoss. Lord Grey liess sich bei der Ankunft des Schiffes in London die Schäden zeigen und beschloss, zuerst den Tee zu degustieren und dann zu entscheiden, ob die Ladung vernichtet werden müsse. Der Tee kam bei Freunden und Bekannten jedoch so gut an, dass der Earl beschloss, den «aromatisierten» Tee in den Handel zu bringen.Ein Earl Grey wird heute nicht mehr nur aus chinesischen Teesorten gemischt, sondern auch aus indischen Sorten (Darjeeling) und passt hervorragend zu leicht salzigen Speisen und kleinen Snacks.
