Ginger (Zingiber officinale), also known as ginger, imber, periwinkle and ginger root, is a plant species from the genus ginger (Zingiber) within the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). The ginger rhizome, the main underground stem of ginger, is used as a culinary spice or medicinal plant. The pharmaceutical word for the ginger rhizome is Zingiberis rhizoma.
Ginger thrives in the tropics and subtropics.
