Peppermint is a medicinal and aromatic plant from the mint genus. It was probably created by chance through the crossing of Mentha aquatica and Mentha spicata, whereby Mentha spicata itself is a cross between Mentha rotundifolia and Mentha longifolia. The nana mint originates from North Africa and is particularly widespread in Morocco. The Arabic word for mint is "nana", which is why this type of mint is also known as nana mint. The plant can reach a height of 30 to 90 centimetres, but usually remains smaller in our climate.
Peppermint is cultivated in temperate climates and often runs wild in crops, for example in Mitcham in Surrey, England, and southern Germany. Important cultivation areas can be found in Michigan and New York, Spain, the Balkans, South America and Asia. Pre-cultivating peppermint in spring has proved to be a good idea. The seeds should only be lightly covered. At a temperature of around 18 °C, the mint germinates within two weeks.
Peppermint is used to treat digestive complaints, flatulence, bile problems and irritable bowel syndrome. It also has a calming effect on tension headaches, colds and the common cold. Peppermint is also used to treat muscle and nerve pain.
