Roses have been known for millions of years and are among the most popular flowers in the world. The genus Rosa belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae) and comprises 100 to 250 species. Roses are characterised by their distinctive features such as thorns, rose hips and imparipinnate leaves. They are shrubs with mostly showy, five-petalled flowers. Most species are found in the Holarctic region. The scientific study of roses is known as rhodology.
The rose is not only one of the oldest and most popular flowering plants in the world, but has also been used in medicine for centuries. The oldest finds of roses were discovered in North America and dated to an age of around 35 million years. The healing properties of rose blossom tea have been known in Chinese medicine for around 2500 years. Today, the rose is cultivated worldwide. In the wild, it is only found in the northern hemisphere, so it is cultivated in the southern hemisphere.
In specialist literature, the effects of rose petal tea are often described as astringent, blood-purifying and nerve-strengthening. Rose petal tea is often used for various types of pain, from headaches to menopausal symptoms and toothache. It is considered a true panacea in naturopathy. The tannins contained in rose blossom tea have the property of binding insolubly with proteins on the mucous membranes. Citronellol (20 to 55%) and geraniol (15 to 40%) are two of the main components of the rose oil contained in the flowers. They inhibit the growth of fungi and bacteria. The scent of rose petal tea alone has a stimulating and mood-enhancing effect. This is why concentrated rose blossom oil is often used in aromatherapy.
