It is not exactly clear how old the rooibos is, but in 1772 it was described for the first time by the botanist Carl Thunberg as a medicinal plant of the Khoisan. The plant is grown worldwide exclusively in the area of the Cederberg Mountains - about 200 km north of Cape Town - around the towns of Clanwilliam and Citrusdal.
