A strongly smoked Chinese black tea that drives the cold out of your limbs with its fragrance and intensity or brings to mind a nice campfire.
Yan Xiao Zhong, "smoked tea", originally comes from Tongmuguan near Wuyishan and is now produced throughout Fujian province. The original Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong, "small variety really from the mountain", known since 1851, was probably created by accident: A passing army needed quarters, whereupon the tea piled up to oxidise was put outside and came into contact with the smoke from the campfires. Even today, the Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong, smoked over pine wood, are the best qualities and are often produced as Gongfucha, i.e. sorted by leaf grade. Simpler, industrially produced (and usually very strongly smoked) teas are called Tarry Lapsang Souchoung. Yan Xiao Zhong are soft, medium-bodied and simple to highly aromatic, depending on the base tea. They are accompanied by strong or subtle smoky notes.
