Coffee Day is celebrated on different days in different countries, but it has the same aim everywhere: to honour the diversity, culture and importance of coffee.
In Switzerland, "Coffee Day" was first launched in 2006 on the initiative of the Swiss SCAE(Speciality Coffee Association).
In addition to the Swiss Coffee Day, there is also the "International Coffee Day", which is celebrated worldwide on 1 October.
This day was officially launched in 2015 by the International Coffee Organisation(ICO) and marks the start of the International Expo in Milan.
The aim of this day is to celebrate the enjoyment of coffee and at the same time draw attention to the challenges in coffee cultivation, such as fair working conditions and sustainability.
Coffee itself has a centuries-long history that began in Ethiopia in the 9th century.
According to legend, a goatherd named Kaldi discovered the revitalising effect of coffee beans after his goats were particularly full of energy after eating the red fruit. Coffee spread from Ethiopia via Yemen to the Arab world in the 15th century and finally became popular in Europe in the 17th century. Coffee experienced a veritable boom and established itself as an indispensable luxury food.
Coffee Day is celebrated in different ways in many countries.
In Switzerland, Germany and Austria, numerous cafés and roasting houses organise special tastings, coffee workshops and events on this day.
The aim is not only to enjoy coffee, but also to promote a conscious approach to coffee and to appreciate the work that goes into every cup.
Coffee Day is not only a reminder of the pleasure of coffee, but also of the complex supply chain from cultivation to the cup.
It raises awareness of the challenges faced by coffee farmers and puts the spotlight on issues such as fair trade, sustainable cultivation and quality.
